A Pennsylvania woman was charged with cashing more than $120,000 in Social Security checks made out to her dead husband after dismembering his corpse and moving to Las Vegas.
Nancy Shedleski, 69, received roughly $121,040 in Social Security benefits paid out to her husband who died in 2015, according to a federal complaint unsealed in Las Vegas on Tuesday.
She chopped up her dead husband’s body and disposed of it piece by piece in the trash, federal officials said.
‘Shedleski confirmed there was no ambulance, no hospitalization, no funeral, no burial and no cremation,’ the complaint said.
She faces a charge of theft of government money.
In December 2019, an anonymous tipster told Social Security officials that Shedleski’s husband, referred to as ‘J.P.S.’ in court documents, had disappeared and that his wife was collecting his benefits.

Initially, Shedleski told federal officials that her husband was traveling. Later, according to the federal complaint, she admitted to dismembering his body and disposing the remains after he died at their Pennsylvania home.
Had Shedleski reported her husband’s death, she would have received $14,000 in survivor’s benefits.
Shedleski’s husband was said to be in his 70s when he died in 2015.
The complaint did not specify the husband’s cause of death but the couple lived in Clairton, a suburb of Pittsburgh, before Shedleski moved to the Resort at Coronado Ranch in Las Vegas in 2017.
The 1, 2 and 3-bedroom apartments there all have resort-style amenities, including a 24-hour heated pool, a clubhouse with billiards and a conference room, and a 24-hour fitness center.

The complaint said her husband last received medical care in 2015 at Jefferson Regional Medical Center in Jefferson Hills, which is near Pittsburgh.
Shedleski was arrested last Thursday and appeared in court in Las Vegas on Friday. She was not asked to enter a plea and was released on her own recognizance pending a November 5 court hearing.
Her court-appointed defense lawyer, Wendi Overmyer, did not immediately respond to an emailed request for comment on behalf of her client.
